New book on history of East End boxing
|
I’ve a good mind to send a copy of this to our current team. Let them know what East End grit and determination is all about!!
If there are any WHO’ers out there that have an interest in boxing as well as the history of East London, then you may like to read a book that I have written that is being published and released for sale this Saturday 15th February.
It is called “EASTbEND – BORN and BLED” and tells the story of Boxing from its earliest bare-knuckled days in the docks, pubs and streets around East London 300 years ago until recent times. It is interwoven with the development of the area and is packed with great facts, stories and images of all aspects of the sport and its links with the social history of the East End.
It has been a huge project for me and has taken three years to put together and includes interviews with some East End boxers. Harry Redknapp has kindly supplied a foreword for the book as there is a small section on the connection with the sport and West Ham football club.
Anyway, if you are interested, it can be ordered or purchased either direct from the publishers – Amberley Books or from most retailers including Amazon, Waterstones, W.H.Smiths and Foyles. It should also be in most of the indie book shops in the East London area and the City.
I am booked in to do a book signing at Waterstones in Romford on Saturday 22nd at 1.00 pm.

Takashi Didn't speak to Joe Chapman. Popped into West Ham Club a couple of times during the research and spoke to Jason Bull there. Mickey May died a couple of years back now. Quite a bit about West ham and Repton and my old Boys club Eton Manor who had a great boxing set up back in the 40's and 50's. A couple of good images from West Ham club in the book

I know him and jason have been at newham boxing club for a while now, I was surprised when I watched a video from a couple of years back when joe said they still rely on fundraising event/dinners to pay the bills. for all the good they do for kids in the local community, you'd think they'd get more support from lottery funding or the sport in general

All Amateur clubs are skint, my old club produces junior European, World and Olympic champions and is still in the same run down hut it's been in all it's life as no one will help them build a new home.
Lottery funding goes to the posh sports.

Apart from Repton and the Peacock Gym that seems to be doing well most of the other clubs around the area are probably struggling. Visited about half a dozen over the past couple of years and a don't know how some keep going.

Lab Yeah Charlie is mentioned a bit. He was actually born in Tunisia but come over here when he was about 3/4 years old. Big bit on him and Terry Lawless who was East End born and bred

CS, yes it's bad that these places aren't set up with money for the next decade, considering the hours they put in with these youngsters

Remember an old film (doc) about Boxing at West Ham Boys and some of the pro fights around East London... called `Fighters'... all about Kaylor's comeback... featured Bradley Stone (RIP), Tibbs, Phil Soundey and a absolute nut job called Jimmy Flint... great viewing if you can get it anywhere...

kips Is Billy Walker featured in the book? I know he keeps a low profile nowadays but I believe he lives in Essex somewhere. He and his brother George had a garage in Plaistow before he started boxing.
